Combat Insults with Sweet Silence

How many times has it happened that somebody has verbally insulted you and in the heat of the moment, you have taken it up as a challenge to produce bigger verbal insults against them?

Have we stopped to think how many times the prophet (S.A.W) was insulted by his own people, yet we do not have a single instance in his lifetime where he spoke back in a similar manner.

The Prophet’s (S.A.W) etiquette is shown in the following instances. Once the prophet was sitting with his companion, and one person used insulting words against Abu Bakr (R.A.A) causing him pain. But Abu Bakr remained silent. The person again used bitter word against Abu Bakr, and still he did not respond. That third time when this ignorant person hurt Abu Bakr with his tongue, he tried answering back. At this point, the prophet (S.A.W) got up and left. Abu Bakr asked him, “are you displeased with me? The prophet replied “No but (when you remained silence) an angel descended from heaven responding to this man abuses but the moment you started replying, the angel went away and the devil surfaced. Meanwhile, I cannot sit where devil is. (Abu Dawud).

Next time when somebody fires verbal insults at you, do not turn it into a word war. Remain silent and enjoy the barakah (Blessings) of the angels around you.
