Is Poverty Genetic?

It is a common occurrence in the society to see poor person comes from a poor family and rich individual from wealthy family especially in the countries where resources are scarce and economic disparity is highly swelled up. A poor family cannot afford the education of their children or at least an average education for their children, leaving out the few exceptions. Absence of quality education cannot add value to any individual whatsoever, except for a very remorseful life, and in some cases destructive habits, which is even worse and in turn ruin their very narrow chances. A good number of poor people have no time to bring up their children, some of them want to do everything possible to raise their children properly, but they just don't have the means. Wealthy families on the other hand often have family members who can always motivate the children to attain good life skills. A child learns a lot from the actions of older family members by imitating what they do on a daily basis, especially when there are great consequence of deeds for example as it concerns addiction to alcohol and other things, all this highlighted above are environmental factors that contribute to poverty in the society.

Recently, scientists have thought weather certain gene contributes to an individual ending up in poverty. Different proposition was put forward, a group of thinkers proposed that in societies with universal education, accessible public library and social welfare which surmounts the environmental factors highlighted earlier, and genetics is the largest cause of poverty. How do you explain a situation where very favorable condition is available and some people are still struck with abject poverty, it makes no sense except a gene or an allele is responsible? They also said there is significant variation in poverty both in races and between races. So outwardly, it seems there is almost certainly some correlations between poverty and various alleles. Liberals have come to deny the facts, and conservatives also denied the moral implication due to reasons that it's a way of condemning people point of view from poor homes into eternal poverty.

Duke university as recent as 2016 reveals a genetic link between poverty and increased risk of depression, it was assumed that adolescents from poor background are more depressed than those from wealthy backgrounds. The lead author Johnna Swartz said they examined pathway through which low socioeconomic status may increase risk for the future development of depression by altering the way genes are expressed and the way brain process information. Specifically they found that adolescents growing up in households with lower social economic status have increased  epigenetic markers near the gene that has been previously associated with depression, which may affect the way the gene is expressed. In future they want to identify specific risk factors present in families with low socioeconomic that may affect epigenetic markers and brain function. But an exciting lesson from their research is that it suggests that our biology is not necessarily fixed from an early age. This opens the possibility that perhaps our biology can change for the better given better positive environmental contexts. It is also remains a puzzle if this changes can be inherited and if poverty is really genetic.
